Sunday 28th April 2019
Bright Stars FC 1-1 Express FC
Champions Stadium Mwererwe
Team captain Nelson Senkatuka scored a vital goal from the spot kick that turned into an equaliser against Express FC in the Stanbic Uganda Cup semifinal 1st leg at the Champions Stadium in Mwererwe on Sunday.
Express FC defender Shafic Kakeeto handled the ball in the area before referee Ashadu Semere pointed to the spot in the 53rd minute just 2 minutes after the visitors had taken the lead Micheal Birungi.
Goalkeeper Hamza Muwonge was at his peak with numerous saves. He denied Brian Umony’s chance to hit the net on two occasions in a one-on-one situation.
In the second half, game changer Jungu Methodius came in for Alfred Onek. The playmaker made immediate impact on the right side with unstoppable dribbles as he beat Express FC defenders minute after minute. His combination with another second half substitute Sebaduka Juma mounted pressure on the visiting team back-line.
In the 70th minute the visitors’ defence got time to breath when the Stars went a man down after defender Andrew Kaggwa was shown a red card for fouling Athur Kigundu. The incident forced tactician Fred Kajoba to bring on another right full back Agrrey Kirya for Dan Birikwalira.
Despite being less, the Stars maintained ball possession until the final whistle. The match ended 1-1.
The 2nd leg will be played on 9th May away at Mutessa II Stadium, in Wankulukuku.
‘It is not a bad result. We had some chances at goal but it is not over yet. We just need to score in the 2nd leg and avoid defeat’ said Paul Kiwanuka Bright Stars FC assistant coach.
